Braces And Retainers: Basic Overview And Care

People having problems with an overbite or underbite have a number of options to align their teeth. Retainers and Braces can be used in different scenarios. General dentists perform minor adjustments on the teeth, but orthodontists are far better at correcting dental problems. That’s why it’s best to consult with an orthodontist as soon as possible for treating teeth irregularities.

The Type Of Braces

There are different kinds of braces. Calgary has one of the best providers when it comes to different types of braces. The number of solutions ranges from metal brackets, wires, elastics, to clear plastic materials. Each type of braces offers a set of benefits but come together to fulfill one goal – to straighten teeth.

Examining How Braces Work

Braces come in different forms and sizes. Various techniques make use of different parts but fall into a number of categories. Here are a number of components that make up braces:

  • Brackets – these are commonly found in traditional braces. Square brackets are used to bond with each tooth, acting as a connecting piece, which will later be a part of a system that applies pressure on the teeth. They act as handles, which will be used for tightening. Over time, the teeth will slowly align and the braces will need adjustments. To make this possible, the connecting wire will be tightened with the bracket holding firm.
  • Orthodontic Bands – these pieces can either be made out of ceramics, stainless steel, and other materials. The bands are cemented in place with a special bonding agent, which will then hold the brackets in place. Stainless steel is a more common option. Although different materials can be used to improve aesthetics, they can cost more.
  • Spacers – the main function of these components are to separate the teeth. This creates a gap in between, which will be used for the placement of orthodontic bands.
  • Arch Wires – these are wires that latch onto the brackets, which act as a guide for teeth movement. Just like orthodontic bands, these components can also be manufactured from different materials but costs will vary.
  • Ties – these can either be made from fine wires or rubber rings that are used to hold the arch wires in place onto the brackets.
  • Buccal Tubes – this holds the arch wires at the end of the brace.
  • Elastic Bands – these stretchy bands are also used to secure the arch wires onto the brackets.
  • Springs – these are installed in between the brackets and arch wires to adjust the space in between the teeth.

Each patient may have the same or a completely different set of braces. The duration required for the braces to fully take effect also differs per patient. Some could last from one to three years or longer in some cases. Cleaning the teeth with the braces in place requires caution. Hitting the braces while brushing the teeth can dislodge the brackets, which will then need to be cemented back in place. Brushing will be done in the same way, but gently in areas where the braces are located. It’s also best to clean in between teeth with dental floss. This takes out the food lodged in between the teeth that can’t be removed by brushing alone. Adults will find the process easier than children. Parents should guide their kids on how to properly do the cleaning until they make it a habit.
